Job Overview:

The Knitting Machine Operator will program, run, monitor, clean, repair, inspect, and maintain eight Shima Seiki knitting machines, including SES-122 12 gauges & 7 gauges, SSR-112 Variables 7 gauges and 14 gauges, and SCG-SW 3 gauges. The Knitting Machine Operator will be responsible for routine maintenance of the machines as well as technical and electrical repairs. The Knitting Machine Operator will be a capable knitting programmer comfortable with CAM applications and flat knitting machines, in general. The Knitting Machine Operator will also be charged with regular quality assessment of knit product and appropriate machinery adjustments.

Description of Duties:

  • Set and adjust Shima Seiki knitting machine parameters such as patterns, tensions, heating mechanisms, quantities, and speeds using CAM software
  • Execute computer programs for automatic knitting production
  • Review guides, technical manuals, charts, samples, and specification sheets and confer with supervisors/designers to determine machine parameters
  • Examine, troubleshoot, and fix mechanical defects and problems that inhibit quality production or cause work stoppage
  • Maintain and repair multiple machines by replacing worn and defective parts and installing, aligning, adjusting, and leveling mechanical components
  • Clean machines and keep them lubricated
  • Inspect manufactured clothing components and accessories for defects
  • Trim clothing components and cut fabrics as needed

Required Education: None

Required Experience:

  • A minimum of 2 years of knitting machine operating experience
  • A minimum of 1 year of demonstrated experience operating Shima Seiki knitting machines
  • A minimum of 2 years of demonstrated experience working with flat knitting machine setups, as well as mechanical maintenance and electrical maintenance of knitting machines
  • A minimum of 2 years of demonstrated experience solving/troubleshooting industrial textile machinery issues
  • Demonstrated experience in utilizing raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques to maximize the effective manufacturing and distribution of goods
  • Demonstrated experience operating and maintaining multiple industrial size knitting machines
  • Demonstrated experience performing style changeovers as required, loading and unloading yarn, and splicing in beams
  • Demonstrated experience receiving cuts from knitting machines and checking for correct knitting set up, including stitch count, fabric weight, correct yarn, correct patterns, yarn breaks, exhausted yarn packages and other quality checks as necessary
  • Demonstrated experience inspecting products to ensure that specifications are met and to determine if machines need adjustment
  • Demonstrated experience documenting, reporting, and communicating quality issues and troubleshooting solutions


Required Skills and Capabilities:

  • Basic knowledge of computers
  • Working knowledge of CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) software, specifically Shima-Seiki SDS-ONE software and Shima-Seiki APEX-3 software
  • Ability to perform simple mathematical calculations and read and utilize common measuring devices
  • Good manual dexterity
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to bend and twist; ability to stand for hours at a time
  • Sharp vision, focus, depth perception, and ability to distinguish colors naturally or with corrective lenses
